We had 5 honeymoons in just one month! It felt like VIL had become Niagara Falls, the Honeymoon capital!
It’s going to be a busy Spring with lots of Summer puppies on the way!
Orca & Tig
Orca cycled early while she was out of Province with her Guardians. They were in Alberta and on their way to Fernie for some skiing when Orca came into season.
Orca’s Guardian, Randi, was prepared to end her vacation and fly back to Victoria with Orca. But, I used to live in Cranbrook, which is very close to Fernie and was able to book Orca’s progesterone testing with my old vet. They still had me in their files from the 1990s!
Randi and Mike then went to the Bahamas for a kayak vacation so Orca stayed with us and enjoyed 2 successful honeymoons with handsome Tig.
Orca is in her final trimester with the Salt & Pepper puppies due May 20th.
We have one spot open due to a deferral – SALT & PEPPER LITTER
Noisette & Buoy
Noisette Cycled two weeks early!
This honeymoon didn’t require a logistical coordinator though. Everything was easy to arrange. Both dogs took an instant shine to each other and the honeymoon was easy.
Noisette had some morning sickness and still doesn’t quite have her appetite back but she is doing well.
Noisette is in her third trimester and bigger than last time. We think we may end up with extra puppies available. If you are interested in this litter you can be added to the waitlist in case she does have extra puppies.
Paws on Your Heart puppies are expected on May 22nd: PAWS ON YOUR HEART LITTER
Haiku & Takoda
Six days later Haiku cycled ahead of schedule! Now we started to wonder if something had been added to the water! 3 girls in 3 weeks and all 3 early!
Travel plans made logistics for this honeymoon with Takoda challenging.
Haiku’s Mom was celebrating her recent retirement in Mexico. While Takoda’s Guardian family were enjoying a family visit in the Netherlands. Now what?
We solved part of the problem by having Haiku come to stay with us. Haiku solved the other part of the problem by waiting until Takoda’s parents returned from the Netherlands to be ready for her first honeymoon.
Then we ran into a major snag. Haiku did not like Takoda. She absolutely refused to have anything to do with him. Poor Takoda did not enjoy being rejected. A new approach was needed and soon before Haiku was no longer fertile.
Plan B was artificial insemination but it was the Easter long weekend. Would our reproduction technician be working?
Fingers were crossed and the email sent. We received a response in minutes. We made plans to meet at the vet clinic. Having strong relationships with your professional partners is essential for a breeding program.
Takoda was a little bewildered by the artificial insemination process. Haiku was still unenthusiastic but less annoyed with this approach to honeymooning. Hardly romantic but it did the trick. We repeated the process the next day. Haiku was still annoyed but more relaxed the second time around.
The Pewter Paws puppies are expected to arrive on June 8th.
JoJo & Jack
A few days later, JoJo cycled. She was not too early but early enough to make us scramble to make arrangements for her honeymoon. Emily, JoJo’s guardian was away, Renald was out of town and Jack’s guardian, Bev was also out of town. A flurry of frantic texts ended with JoJo coming to stay at Van Isle Doodles and Taylor, my assistant, taking Jack to stay at her house. Having an assistant who lives nearby with the ability to board our guardians is priceless in situations like this.
JoJo and Jack hit it off and enjoyed their three encounters together. There was a fair bit of flirty dancing followed by serious business. JoJo is expecting puppies to arrive on June 13th. This litter is due the day after my birthday – what a great present!
Tippy & Coffee Crisp
2 days after JoJo cycled, you guessed it, another girl cycled early.
Tippy was expected to come into season around the end of May. I guess the tiny bit of Spring weather we had got all these girls into the mood!
Tippy’s honeymoon was special for me.
She went to Chilliwack to be bred by Chilliwack Labradoodles’ Bailey. Chilliwack Labradoodles is owned by my student Sherry Heggs. I was so proud of Sherry, it is a special moment when the mentor starts to use the mentee’s dogs in their breeding program.
As we had Belle’s puppies on the ground and other girls staying here, Tippy travelled with our wonderful assistant, Taylor. Taylor took Tippy for a hike at nearby Bridal Falls and to the Tulip Festival.
The Tipsy Coffee puppies are expected to arrive on June 17th. My plan is to keep a girl from this litter as a breeding prospect. Now, to come up with a name that has Sherry and Chilliwack in it. Any ideas?
