Van Isle Doodles takes great care to thoroughly test and investigate all potential breeding stock for both genetic health and temperament. We feel our breeding dogs are as healthy mentally and physically as they can possibly be thus allowing us to offer a longer than usual Health Warranty of 3 years.

Our dogs are tested through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals – OFA – to ensure their hips are correct and not dysplastic and that their elbows also are negative for any structural issues.

OFA examinations are done by x-ray while the dog is under sedation by a specially trained veterinarian. The x-rays are then forwarded to OFA for examination and the dog given a ranking from Dysplastic through to Excellent as compared to other dogs of the same breed who have been tested. The database continues to grow as more and more Australian Labradoodle breeders offer new breeding dogs for consideration.

Our dogs also are examined by a canine opthamologist to ensure their eyes are not in any way compromised. We continue to have our dogs’ eyes examined annually for the entire time they are being used as breeding dogs. This type of certification is referred to as a CERF examination.

All our dogs are registered with the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) and we are bound to comply with, or in our case, exceed, the minimum health testing requirements mandated by the organization. When choosing outside studs for our breeding girls, we ensure those studs have met the same threshold as our girls in terms of health testing.

With respect to temperament, we carefully select our breeding dogs for excellence in temperament and continue to foster and develop our dogs’ temperaments by dedicating our time and attention to them. All our breeding dogs live as full members of our household in our home with us. Our dogs sleep in our bedroom, spend all their time with us during the day engaged in a variety of different activities to keep them in prime physical and mental health. Unlike some breeders, we do not re-home our breeding dogs at retirement – they are true members of our family and live with us forever.
