These 3 little chocolate phantoms are a week old and doing amazing. With a small litter like this we never need to worry about someone not being able to find a spot at the milk bar. Each of the puppies has lots of opportunity to nurse from a variety of positions. With little competition that tends to make them a little bit calmer and quieter than a larger litter. They get lots of attention from Hazel and it shows in how calm and quiet they are.
Hazel is doing great. Because she has so much time and energy to devote to the puppies, she is settling quite comfortably into her role. She is now confident enough to leave them for 30-40 minutes at a time so she can get out and enjoy a bone or play with the other dogs. She has a great appetite and is consuming about four times her usual amount. She eats four times a day rather than twice, and about 10% additional each meal. She isn’t keen on eating on her own right now, she waits for me to hand feed her, sometimes wanting me to come in the box to feed her there. Other times she doesn’t want the food near the puppies so we sit outside of the box.
Hazel and Ripple are sharing the maternity ward, they have sorted out their differences and are no longer worried about each other. They are quite comfortable having both of them in here, no more arguments. So that has really helped everybody settle down. Hazel is an extremely protective mama dog. If she hears any strange sounds or voices, she’s immediately at the door growling and barking until we let her out to investigate, then she can calm back down and goes back to the puppies. Shes a bit clumsy as she does this, so we often hear the puppies protesting that Mama just stepped on them. Their little voices are so interesting and adorable. They are very expressive, you can tell if they are angry, sad, hurt, hungry or happy. They make the sweetest little gurgling sounds as they nurse. Right now they can’t hear any of those sounds, but generally around the 3-week mark their ears will open and then they become real little dogs!
Dilute Chocolate Phantom. Her base coat color looks as though it is diluted. She also has quite a bit of white. She has a strip of white that runs from her nose over her head to her collar. Her front paws are almost half white. Her belly is also substantially white. Her tail has the most adorable white tip.
Chocolate phantom with abstract white markings. Her white markings are on the top of her head, along her nose, under her chin, her chest and all four paws are white. The phantom markings are on top of the white so not very visible. She also has tan points on the side of her head, eyebrows, under her tail and her hind legs.
