She Almost Didn’t Make It!

Xray of Joya's Hips
Joya is one of our most charismatic and intelligent mama dogs. But she almost didn’t make it into our breeding program!

Test results not mailed, misfiled papers and a calamity of errors almost meant Joya was never part of the Van Isle Doodles team!

Testing

One part of being a professional labradoodle breeder is to be sure we test all our prospective breeding dogs for various health tests (want to learn more about these tests, click here). In mid-January of 2023 Joya had her hips tested by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

OFA reviews radiographs a specially qualified veterinarian takes and then provides an opinion-based score for the dog’s hips.

Waiting for the results of these tests can be nerve-wracking. A typical breeding dog is an investment of $15,000.00 and this is before we even know if they have passed their tests. If they fail, we can’t use them as breeding dogs.

Delays

Joya began her health testing in October of 2021 with an eye test. OFA is also responsible for eye testing and that’s where Joya’s misadventures began.

Joya’s birthday is 9 June 2021 but on her eye test, it was recorded as 9 January 2021. That would prove to be a problem later, but even before that, when Joya went for her hip testing the vet clinic accidentally didn’t send the radiographs to OFA!

I contacted the vet clinic and her xrays were sent in right away.

OFA received the xrays, but because the birthdate on the records didn’t match the eye test, there was another delay.

After a few weeks, I still didn’t have any results, it seemed like something else had gone wrong.

This time OFA had mistakenly put her xrays in the “Completed files” rather than the “Awaiting Review” files.

When one thing goes wrong, then everything goes wrong!

Results!

Finally, in March of 2023, the long-awaited results arrived. Joya scored very well with a “Good” rating (this is the second highest rating).

We couldn’t have been happier (or more relieved!).

Our beautiful chocolate girl has completed her testing and is ready to become a Mama labradoodle in the fall of 2023.

Takoda will be the Papa for Joya’s first litter, and we plan to call it the Tiramisu litter.

Chocolate, coffee, cinnamon and cream – there’s no better combination in the world!
